The collection consists primarily of materials generated or collected by the central administrative office of Hull House Association and documents the history, leadership, activities, and mission of the organization. It also includes materials relating to the affiliates and the administrative records from two affiliate centers: the Jane Addams Center and the Uptown Center. The materials in the collection span the years from 1889 to 1999, but the bulk of material is from approximately 1963 to 1979.

In 1963, Hull-House, the world-famous social settlement house founded by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr, moved from its original location in the Near West Side of Chicago and decentralized its services. The newly restructured Hull House Association became the administrative entity overseeing a confederation of affiliated organizations that included former settlement houses, newly created community centers, and a myriad of programs hosted in Hull House satellites.
